Some people appreciate the extra help while others find that too many bumps irritate their hands, knees, and elbows.
Whatever your preference, do your best to find a mat that is non-slip.
Material: most yoga mats are made from PVC, but some other materials used are jute, cotton, and rubber.

How long is the average yoga mat?
As we said at the start, you’ll find that the typical mat is around 68” long which just isn’t feasible for taller individuals – or those over 5’8”.
The good news is that there are plenty of longer mats out there; you just may have to do a bit of research to find them.
Your best chance is ordering online rather than searching through nearby athletic stores.
How long should my yoga mat be? What’s the right yoga mat length for my height?
Now, this is wholly dependent on your height and preference.
You want to be able to lie down on your mat and stretch out with all of your body still on the mat.
If you’re extremely tall, it’s okay if it’s a few inches short for most poses.
Here’s a short yoga mat size chart for starters:
- 5′ 8″ and under -> 68″ mat
- 5′ 8″ to 6′ tall -> 72″ mat
- 6′ to 6′ 5″ -> 79″ mat
- Over 6′ 5″ tall -> 84″ mat or beyond
If you’re taller than average, keep in mind that you’ll probably want a little extra width as well.
Does thickness matter in a mat?
Again, this has to do with your preference. I touched on this before, but the thicker the mat, the more cushion and prevention of injury you have.
However, thicker mats tend to be heavier and harder for good balance.
If you do Pilates a lot, a thicker mat would be best, but if you’re more into hot yoga, a thinner one would do. Most mats are around 4 and 6mm thick.
How much does an extra long yoga mat cost?
All the mats I’ve listed above have different price ranges, so you should be able to find a good one within your budget.
The more you’re willing to pay, however, the more durable and quality your mat will likely be.
If you’re taller, you might just want to prioritize one that allows you extra space and a comfortable practice!
