Gaiam-yoga-block-review

First, on our list is the Gaiam Yoga Block set which includes 2 blocks and an 8ft cotton strap. These blocks are great for stability and minimize the risk of injuries.

The strap provides you a further range of motion and helps you sustain challenging positions for longer periods of time.

Using the strap will give you deeper stretches and helps your shoulders relax, allowing you to focus on the tighter areas of your body.

I am a huge fan of the softer foam blocks which makes them very comfortable for poses which requires me to lay down or stretching while sitting.

When certain areas of my body are too tight and I find certain poses challenging, using the block will help me correct my pose and lower the risk of me being injured.

Pros

  • Easy to clean and maintain.
  • Sold as a 2-pack and includes a strap.
  • Lightweight and portable, great for beginners.

Cons

  • They’re a lot softer than other yoga blocks

Cork-Wood-Yoga-Blocks-review

These yoga blocks are made with cork and have different designs printed onto the surface to make up for the lack of color choice.

They measure 9” x 6” x 4” and comes in a set of 2.

These designs range from popular yoga images like the Mandala, Elephant, Lotus and Turtle.

The slip-resistant surface helps prevent you from slipping during your yoga workout routine.

Since they are made with high-density cork, it ensures the blocks are long-lasting and durable.

Compared to foam blocks, these blocks are much firmer and do not dent or scratch easily.

I do love using cork blocks, however, they do crumble quite easily and leaves a bit of residue where you use them.

Since they’re not made of solid wood, they will eventually crumble. This is something to keep in mind when purchasing cork blocks.

How to use yoga blocks?

Whether you’re a regular yogi or just occasionally like doing yoga to mix up your exercise routine or simply relax and stretch your muscles, you’ve probably used or, at least, seen yoga blocks.

Maybe they’ve become a part of your routine already, but if you’ve had little to no experience with yoga blocks, it will basically change your life once you realize the many ways they can be used.

They’re the perfect addition to your practice to aid with proper alignment, standing poses, and deep stretches, with balance and flexibility, with relief for tight hamstrings, and with creating space between your shoulders.

In my personal practice, I can’t even think about doing yoga without my yoga blocks; with their versatile nature, they are the least dispensable out of all my yoga equipment.

I can use them with all types of yoga, from heat-building vinyasa yoga to restorative yoga.

If you’re considering investing in yoga blocks for your own home, I encourage you to take the leap.

I promise, it will change your life. But first, let’s look at the different types of blocks you can buy to ensure you make the purchase that’s best for your preferences and lifestyle!

How to choose yoga blocks?

These are just a few of the ways yoga blocks can be used, just to begin wrapping your mind around the possibilities.

As you grow in your practice, yoga blocks will help you create good body positions that you will use indefinitely.

They are foundational to a clean and firm practice and go further in helping you increase muscle strength.

Even just holding one out in front of you adds resistance for your arms.

For something that looks so simple and mundane, they are quite the tool, so try it for yourself!

But how do you choose a yoga block for yourself? Well, first off what type of practice are you most involved in and what are the results you’re wanting?

Weigh your decision and choose your yoga block material accordingly, but don’t get too stressed about picking just the right kind, especially if you’re a beginner.

They’re all made to produce the same results, so just having one is really all you need.

I personally prefer ones made from polyethylene because they are scratch-resistant and also have a strong resistance to microbial growth, making it harder for them to build up bacteria and easier to clean.

What are the benefits of using yoga blocks?

They are great for beginners in that they help you to find your balance in standing hands-to-floor poses.

Sometimes even those who have been practicing yoga for years have days when balance is nearly impossible.

One pose in particular that is difficult to hold is the Half Moon Pose (Ardha Chandrasana) as it requires you to have one arm on the ground while on leg remains parallel to the mat and the front side of your body opens so that you’re gazing at the opposite arm lifted straight above you.

It’s poses like these where you find yourself extremely grateful to have a block on hand as it shortens the distance between your arm and the floor.

Another example is the Wide-Legged Forward Bend (Prasarita Padottanasana); if you can’t get your head to touch the floor, you can use the yoga block to add weight by placing it on the floor.

Another way they are useful is in supporting tight hips and knees.

Sometimes it’s hard, even for teachers, to force your sit bones down; stacking one or two blocks on top of each other helps you not to injure yourself.

Some examples of poses like these are the Hero Pose (Virasana) and the Pigeon Pose (Eka Pada Rajakapotasana).

Men especially have tight hips, but if you also experience tension in your knees in poses like Head-to-Knee Forward Bend that require your knees to touch the mat, yoga blocks can be a lifesaver.

They’re also great for fine tuning your poses.

You can place one between your thighs to make sure your legs are properly aligned when they tend to move towards the sides, like in the Bridge Pose (Setu Bandasana) or the Wheel Pose (Urdhva Dhanurasana).

Or you can put it to use in simpler poses like Downward Facing Dog (Adho Mukha Svanasana) or the Plan Pose (Chaturanga Dandasana) to ensure your legs are constantly active.

Finally, they’re great for those of you who are already flexible but want to add extra length.

You can use the block to extend your reach and challenge yourself to go even further by placing the wide side against the soles of your feet.

To go even further, you can change the angles to 6- or 9-inch dimensions.

What are yoga blocks made out of?

The yoga blocks you’ve probably most often seen are the foam ones. Studios tend to buy these, as they are the lightest and least expensive.

For personal use, this is ideal for traveling or taking them with you to classes.

They’re relatively durable and easy to clean, but they show wear and tear pretty quickly.

Another downside is that they’re less stable for putting lots of weight on them; they’re especially impractical for those with weak wrists who want to use them for standing poses and arm balances.

Finally, if being eco-friendly is something that concerns you, wood or cork blocks are the way to go.

Cork blocks are sturdier than the foam ones but less so than the wooden ones.

They absorb sweat and odors due to their porous nature, so it’s unlikely that you’ll see them in yoga studios, and they also crumble as they age.

As a result, they usually don’t last as long as foam or wood.

The eco-friendliest yoga blocks are the wooden ones, especially those made from bamboo, but they also come in maple and poplar.

They’re heavier than the previous two blocks, weighing between 1.5 to 2.5 pounds, but they are durable and will probably last forever.

They’re perfect for your home practice.

However, they can be quite slick when your hands get sweaty, and they’re the most expensive out of all your options.

They also come in different sizes, so you’ll want to consider a few things before you grab a size for yourself, such as hand size, flexibility (if you’re not naturally flexible, you may want to invest in a taller one), and stability (if you’re shakier, wider would be the way to go).

Whatever type of block you decide makes sense for your lifestyle, you can use these in so many ways throughout your practice.

It’s an investment you’ll definitely not regret.

These blocks that are just slightly bigger and much lighter than bricks are so simple yet so vital for both beginners and pros.

Conclusion

You’ll find all different sizes in the materials we discussed in countless colors and prices, so it will be no problem to find the one that’s perfect for you!

If you’ve just begun your yoga practice, you may want to consider getting a cheaper foam one to start.

Once you know you’re a yogi for life, you can invest in blocks that are better quality and better for you.

But as you’ve seen, having a yoga block doesn’t mean spending a lot of money.

A lot of them even include money-back guarantees.

Whichever you choose, I’m sure you will not regret making a yoga block a part of your daily practice.

7 Yoga Poses for Joint Pain Relief

yoga-poses-for-joint-pain-relief

If you’ve ever experienced joint pain, you know how debilitating it can be…

It does not only generate pain and discomfort, but it also limits you from going about your day to day life as you would usually.

Needless to say, this is irritating and annoying, but in cases of severe or chronic joint pain, it can even lead to depression.

Many chronic joint pain patients have tried countless ways to eliminate joint pain, and most of them provided little or no relief. But, there is one thing that without exception has helped every single person that tried it, and that is yoga.

Yoga has had countless proven benefits for the whole body, especially when it comes to joint or muscle pain and some of the main ones are:

It increases blood circulation

When you do yoga, your heart rate increases which open up your veins and lets blood flow through them freely.

Your body, and most importantly, your joints will receive all the important nutrients that they need to function healthily throughout the day.

It increases flexibility

Yoga makes your whole body more flexible and awakens your “sleepy” muscles.

And by stretching these sleepy muscles and activating them regularly, you alleviate the pressure placed on your joints as well as the stiffness you feel in them which can later lead to discomfort and pain.

It increases muscle strength

If your muscles are weak, your body relies on the joints for support and balance, which wears them down fast and makes them weaker.

But, practicing yoga activates your muscles and makes them stronger, enabling them to support your body better and with it, minimizes the strain placed on your joints.

It improves overall wellness

Doing yoga helps your overall body and spirit. It helps you feel lighter, more flexible and stronger. It also helps bring balance between your mind and soul, which has countless benefits for the whole body.

Your body will start functioning in a healthy way, and that includes all your joints and muscles.

Yoga improves the range of motion of your joints

Every joint in your body has a range of motion that should be maintained over time.

If you don’t move your joints enough, this range will decrease and the other way around – when you move your joints, you improve the range of motion, which results in better movement overall.

You’ll be able to do things you weren’t able to do previously and that’s all thanks to the better range of motion of your joints.

Alleviates pressure placed on your joints

When you do yoga, you help your body function in the right way, as it should. This means that every part of your body can do only the job that it’s meant to do, and not compensate for the lack of other parts, which is the case with your muscles and joints.

If your muscles don’t work right, your joints work double their role to compensate for it, which wears them down faster and makes them more prone to injuries, inflammation and chronic pain.

But, if you practice yoga and maintain healthy muscles, they will support your body along with your joints, minimizing the probability of any inflammation.

7 Yoga Poses for Joint Pain Relief

1. Tadasana

This is one of the easiest poses to do, especially if you’re a beginner and haven’t done much exercise prior to this. All you need to do is stand on your toes and stretch your arms as high up as you can while keeping your hands clutched together.

To further stretch your muscles, you can bend your arms backward while stretching them upwards. This will help your muscles stretch and relieve the pressure from your joints by promoting blood flow through them.

Having a healthy circulation to your arms and legs lets all the important nutrients come to your joints and heal any inflammation you might have going on there.

2.Virabhadrasana

Also known as The Warrior pose, this is a great exercise to strengthen your shoulders and bring balance to your whole body.

It’s also fairly easy to do since all you need to do is turn your right foot outwards and your left foot inwards while keeping your lower torso faced forward.

Bring your arms up to the level of your shoulders and press the weight of your body to the foot facing outwards while gazing at your thumbs. Then rotate to the other side and hold the pose for 1 minute on each side.

After doing this pose for a certain period, you will start feeling your balance improving and your shoulders and arms become stronger.

This means that you’re returning the lost strength in your joints, which will minimize any pain or stiffness you might have been experiencing previously.

3. Makarasana

Makarasana is one of the easiest yoga poses out there, and one of the favorite ones too since it involves only laying down (it’s true!).

Believe it or not, this pose helps the knees and joints to stretch and become more flexible, stronger and healthier by improving circulation and bringing healthy nutrients to them.

It’s done by laying on your stomach with toes straight and your hands placed beneath your head to support it. By holding this position, you’re letting your joints rest, at the same time stretching your muscles to increase their flexibility and strength.

4. Januhastasana

This is the best yoga pose to do to alleviate joint pain. Doing this pose regularly every day helps increase circulation to the lower part of the body and bring more nutrients to your joints and muscles by doing so.

Not only will your joints be more flexible, but you will also minimize the risk of inflammation and experiencing any type of pain in this area.

It’s done by laying on your stomach and lifting your upper body with your arms as high up as you can and holding that pose for one minute in a few series.

5. Cow Pose

The cow pose helps the most important bone in our bodies – the spine. By doing the Cow pose regularly, you will promote flexibility and stretching of the spine, ultimately resulting in better circulation throughout the whole body which prevents inflammation and joint pain.

It’s also fairly easy to do and very beneficial for all muscles and joints.

To do this pose, you need to go down on all fours with your hands on the ground with your fingers spread and your hands positioned parallel to your shoulders.

Bring your chest down towards the mat and tip your pelvis up so you’re positioned with your sitting bones reaching up. Hold this pose for 30 seconds in a few series.

6. Dhanurasana (Bow Pose)

Named after the body shape you make while doing it, the Bow pose is ideal for anyone experiencing shoulder stiffness, discomfort, or pain. By doing it, you open up the shoulders, make your back more flexible and relieve your body of stress and fatigue.

You do it by laying down on your stomach and stretch your arms and legs towards your spine by grabbing your feet with your hands. It’s good to hold this position for around 30 seconds to let your muscles relax and allow blood to flow through the parts of the body where there’s tension.

7. Makara Adho Mukha Svanasana (Dolphin Plank pose)

This pose does wonder for the back, shoulders, arms, and legs. It does this by stretching the shoulders and hamstrings and strengthen the whole body at the same time relieving the body of any fatigue and backache. In fact, it has also shown to help prevent osteoporosis.

If you’re wondering how it’s done, it’s actually not very different from the regular plank. You lay down on your stomach, place your elbows on the ground parallel to your shoulders and lift your body up by supporting it with your elbows and toes.

By doing this, you’re making your joints and muscles stronger, which results in less pain.

YogaDownload Review – Here’s What I Really Think!

yogadownload-review

I’m sure many of you have had a situation where you’ve paid any type of membership and didn’t go to more than 2 or 3 classes.

Well, I experienced that a lot, and not because I was irresponsible, but it was just how it turned out. Really.

Here’s what happened…

I’ve always been an active person that leads a healthy life. I always tend to buy organic food, I love to cook, I walk my dog every day and most important for this review – I visit yoga classes 3 times a week.

Well, actually, I’m supposed to say those things in past sentence. I did all those things before.

Once I got accepted at my job as a financial advisor, everything in my life seemed to start taking a wrong turn.

My job included traveling very often, sometimes for weeks at a time, which meant I couldn’t visit the yoga classes I did until then.

Plus, I was staying at hotels, so I couldn’t cook for myself, nor buy my healthy groceries anymore.

I was home for the weekends, but what was I supposed to do first – see my family, friends and my dog, rest for the upcoming week, do exercise, shop, rest, date, go out…WHAT?

My life was in total chaos. I looked so composed and professional on the outside, but inside me was an emotional and psychological chaos.

Quitting was not an option for me, because I worked so hard to get to that position, but the change in lifestyle was so much to take in, that I was in utter chaos, trust me.

This resulted in me feeling tired and agitated all the time. I desperately wanted to find a way to balance everything, but I just didn’t have the time.

Yoga helped me release my body of the negative energy and be positive, so when that was taken away from me, I didn’t know how to cope with all the stress.

I stopped buying organic food and cooking since I didn’t have the time to prepare it anyway, so my weight started to go up.

Now I was faced with another problem in my life. I didn’t consider myself fat by any means, but my body wasn’t what it was before…it didn’t look as it did before.

I thought that my weight was going to be the biggest issue I’d have to deal with. I was so wrong.

I started experiencing episodes of pain in my lower back. Actually, they first started as small stiffness in my back, which I ignored, but then gradually started increasing to the point I had to take painkillers to stop them for a while.

I kept postponing going to the doctor, thinking it would go away on itself which obviously didn’t happen.

I found myself consuming painkillers daily and when my mother saw me doing it, she immediately scheduled an appointment with my physician.

He did a scan of my back which showed I had developed spondylosis. My whole lower back was inflamed, which was why I experienced stiffness and back pain.

When we were discussing the treatment of my condition, I mentioned I used to do yoga and he told me that that was one of the best things I could do to help cure my spondylosis. So, I knew I had to go back to it, but I just had to find a way I could do it.

I started thinking about doing yoga for the weekends only since I was certainly home then, but that turned out impossible, then I tried looking for a yoga company that holds classes in multiple states that would allow me to pay a monthly membership…but that also wasn’t a viable option.

Then, because of my searches, I saw an ad about a website called YogaDownload. Unconsciously, I opened it and found the thing that saved me.

It was a website with online yoga classes by professionals, which meant I could do yoga wherever I wanted.

The fact that I was on the road often didn’t matter, all I needed was my yoga mat and a gadget where I could play the videos, and I was good to go!

The thought of being able to go back to having my healthy lifestyle, while still keeping my career was a shot I could not miss.

So, I started reading as much as I could about it, and once I ordered it, everything started happening at once.

This whole experience was so amazing I just had to share it with you. Following is everything you need to know about Yogadownload and how it helped me.

What is YogaDownload?

Yogadownload is a widely popular online service that allows you to view 1,000 online yoga classes through their website in exchange for a membership fee.

Depending on the program you buy from them, you can also download the videos and watch them on PC, laptop, tablet, phone or whatever gadget you own.

This was a huge plus for me since I always prefer sitting on my iPad rather than the laptop or PC (but don’t we all?).

So, this meant that I probably could do yoga whenever and wherever I wanted. Like, I wouldn’t have to go out in the cold. Nor in the hot. I could just decide I wanted to do yoga NOW, and do it. Quite appealing, isn’t it?

Needless to say, with the busy schedule I had, this was perfect for me.

The Creator of YogaDownload

Anyone who has visited yoga classes even a few times will know that not everyone can be a yoga master or teach yoga.

This is why I wanted to find out who designed this website and who came up with all the classes on it. I wanted to be sure that I wouldn’t just waste my time and effort for nothing.

So, I went on their website and found that it said “Founded by people who love yoga, love music, and experience life as an extension of their practice, Yoga Download is yoga for the way you really live” which was even better than what I expected.

It wasn’t made by one person that wanted to make profits out of something, but from a group of people that look at yoga as a way of life, and want to share that lifestyle with others.

How Does YogaDownload Work

The basic principle of the website is the same as any other membership website. You need to sign in, choose the type of access you’d like, the level of yoga experience you have, and you’re good to go.

So, when I went to sign in to the website, I first had to choose which type of access I’d get. I knew that yoga classes were over $50 a month, so I made the decision not to pay a price over that.

And let me tell you people, I was shocked at how cheap the programs were.

There were 2 offers I could choose:

  • Premier which offered unlimited video streaming, 4 class downloads for free every month and 50% discount on programs and packages for $10 a month.
  • Elite which offered unlimited video streaming, unlimited free video downloads every month and free programs and packages for $18 a month.

These programs were also available to get for multiple months at a discounted price.

  • 3 months Premier for $24
  • 6 months Premier for $45
  • Yearly Elite for $90

I personally decided to go for the Elite program, the monthly one because it was the one that offered the biggest access to thing for an affordable price.

And I wanted to try it out first before getting the long-term version of it.

What’s Included in The Program

When I got my access, there were a few more choices I had to make. The next thing I had to choose was the program I was going to follow and there were 4 levels offered:

Level 1 – Beginner – designed for people with minimal or no experience in yoga, but want to start practicing it. It has all the basics explained before starting so anyone can understand how to do yoga properly before starting.

Level 2 – Experienced Beginner – yoga level for those who have a little bit of knowledge about yoga, but want to learn more about it through yoga classes.

Level 3 – Intermediate – classes for those who’ve probably visited a few yoga classes and know the basics of yoga, breathing, and movements.

Level 4 – Advanced-Intermediate – for those who are experienced in yoga and want to perform advanced poses.

Because I had a background knowledge of yoga as I mentioned previously, I decided to go for the Intermediate program.

It’s really important to choose the right program for you, since all the videos are made according to the level of knowledge you select.

There was one more thing I chose, but this was a decision I was making every time I decided to exercise. It was the level of intensity the classes were going to be.

They were specifically made for every program, so it didn’t matter which level I was on, I could always go for the type of exercise I wanted. As of now, I’ve tested each intensity and this was my experience with each one:

Ahhhhhh – Lowest Intensity – Whenever I just wanted to relax and let go of the negativity in my life, I’d go for the lowest intensity class.

After each session, I felt relaxed and more balanced, as if all the negative tension from my body suddenly disappeared. I recommend this class for anyone that as a stressful life and needs to relax.

Everyday Namaste – Low Intensity –In the beginning, the everyday Namaste exercises were a bit challenging to do, since I was really out of shape, but once I got back in it, they were a great stretching or warming up for the daily routines.

You’ll Feel It – Medium Intensity – I call these classes a nice sweat session that I enjoy. I must say they are personally my favorite because they combine everything I need – strengthening of the muscles, stretching, sweating off extra weight and releasing myself from the negativity inside me.

Bring A Towel – High Intensity – whenever I had enough time and I wasn’t exhausted, this was my go-to class. It’s designed to make you sweat like crazy, so I’d recommend you go for this one last.

There are hundreds of yoga styles included in the program, so never, not even for a second did I feel bored of exercising.

The list of yoga styles includes: Align and Flow, Anusara Yoga, Ashtanga Yoga, Baptiste Power Yoga, Beginner Yoga, Barre, Bhakti Yoga, Films & Documentaries, Forrest Yoga, Fusion Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Hot Yoga, Iyengar Yoga, Jivamukti Yoga, Kid’s Yoga, Kundalini Yoga, Meditation, Pilates, Power Yoga, Prana Flow Vinyasa, Pranayama, Prenatal Yoga, Postnatal Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Vinyasa Yoga, Yin Yoga, Yoga With Weights, and Yoga en Español.

The Pros and Cons of Using YogaDownload

I personally LOVE the program. There are so many things I can do thanks to it, that I wouldn’t be able to do with other programs.

It’s convenient – unlike yoga classes, I can practice at the comfort of my own home, in the hotels during my travels or any other place I wanted.

Personalized training – whether you want just a quick stretch or a nice sweating, you can always choose how much and how long you will exercise for. There were also countless styles to choose from, so I haven’t managed to try out even half of them.

Affordable exercise – Yoga classes can cost up to $100 a month, while YogaDownload is $90 PER YEAR. I think I don’t even need to explain this further.

24/7 access – yoga classes are in a pre-arranged time and at a pre-arranged place, which means that if you’re busy, you’d miss the session and your money. With Yogadownload, all the videos are there, in your device (in my case my phone), so you can do yoga the minute you want to.

Professional service – The people working on the website are true professionals. I can’t even begin to explain how unified every class is. It has the perfect ambient, perfect accompanying music and wonderful yoga teachers from all over the world. I really appreciated all the attention put into all of it.

Χ No direct contact – This is one of the few things that I didn’t like. Whenever I was unable to do a pose or had some question about a technique, I didn’t have anyone to ask, which bothered me a bit. It’s always better to have someone motivate you throughout the class and give you advice.

The benefits of using Yogadownload

Ah, I can’t even begin to thank this website enough because it has done so much for me.

I’m able to do what I’ve always wanted to do – practice yoga regularly without having to sacrifice an important aspect of my life.

I can do it whenever I want and wherever I want, and the fact that I’m traveling often doesn’t even matter.

As time went on, I noticed that the constant pain in my back started to disappear slowly.

I was more mobile, felt better and eventually, I was pain-free. I visited my physician and he said my back had slowly started to recuperate.

My inflammation was starting to disappear, which made me so happy. I actually did notice it happened since I didn’t experience the pain I previously did when I was sitting or standing for long periods.

Not only that but previously, when I saw all that weight I was putting on, my confidence really took a hit.

In my mind, I was letting go of myself and my health, which is something I promised myself I wouldn’t do.

I thought that I’d have to make a choice between two things I cared about a lot – health or my job, not knowing I had Yogadownload as an option.

Thanks to it, I’m able to be the successful corporate woman I always dreamed of being, while still being able to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Yoga doesn’t only help me maintain my physical health, but also my mental health.

Working as a financial advisor is really stressful since I have so many lives and companies depending on me (and a nagging manager). Yoga helped me relax, breathe and let go of everything.

I was able to deal with the problems in my life more rationally and not panic in sticky situations, which also helped me improve my work results.
